“True success begins when we simply find that inner spark, that talent, that passion in our lives, and go after it to the exclusion of all the other things”—Ephren Taylor

America has always been hailed as “the land of opportunity” and entrepreneur Ephren Taylor personifies that belief. Coming from humble origins, Taylor founded his first business at 12 (a video game company), and was a multimillionaire CEO merely a decade later.

In CREATING SUCCESS FROM THE INSIDE OUT: Develop the Focus and Strategy to Uncover the Life You Want (Wiley. $24.95, November 2007, Hardcover), Taylor explains how multimillionaire young entrepreneurs think about success and achievement.

CREATING SUCCESS FROM THE INSIDE OUT isn't a get-rich-quick scheme, but honest insight into the mindset and skills it takes to get ahead. He believes that every person has what it takes to succeed, if they can find the inspiration and creativity to think about success in the proper way. It's not what they wear, what they read, or where they go to school that determines success for today's young entrepreneurs, but how they think. Taylor breaks down perceived limits and disadvantages and provides examples of people, including himself, who have achieved great success starting from scratch. Taylor, along with co-author Emerson Brantley, offers readers straightforward advice on how to tell if they're going in the right direction, how to avoid the success-killers of life, their own fears and excuses, and how to succeed in business and life by:

▪ Taking responsibility for your own life

▪ Saving, investing, and raising capital

▪ Overcoming obstacles

▪ Getting past fear

▪ Moving past excuses

▪ Finding motivation and mentors

▪ Developing focus and creativity

▪ Working faster and smarter

As Taylor says, he cannot provide readers with “a road map for their lives,” but he can give them a compass and some powerful travel tips. And though he makes an excellent guide, acting on the information and using the compass is all up to the individual.

Inspirational, motivational, and informative, CREATING SUCCESS FROM THE INSIDE OUT is the smart and timely response to the typical book of business advice.

Is Research for a New Business Tax Deductible?

Is Research for a New Business Tax Deductible?

by Steve Kroening
October 18, 2007 With a lot of uncertainty floating around the economy these days, many people are out of work. These folks are either looking for work or thinking about starting their own business. We've had several people write in looking for help with this area. One subscriber, Karen M., asked:

"I have a question about starting a business in Michigan where the economy for employment has taken a drastic turn. Do you know if the research and development of a business is a tax deductible expense and can you elaborate on that for me?"

We turned to our colleague Dr. Wayne Essex, president of the full-service accounting firm Essex & Associates, for the answer.

Dr. Essex said, "Yes, research expenses are deductible up to a maximum $5,000 in the start-up year. The $5,000 is deductible even if the business idea does not come to fruition. The expense would be taken on a Schedule C, Profit and Loss from Business, and then transferred to the front page of the 1040.

"This research expense could also be delayed until the new business has revenue and then offset against those sales. This $5,000 expense will also lower the state tax of Michigan. Michigan uses the Adjusted Gross Income on the federal return. You'll want to check with an accountant for details in other states."

I'd also like to add that I'm excited you're looking for different options in a rough economy. I wrote a couple of weeks ago that getting stuck in a rough spot can produce some wonder opportunities if you're willing to step back and look at your options from a different perspective.

If you're in a tight spot, don't just try to muscle through it. Step back, relax in God's trustworthiness, and look around. You'll find a lot more options than you thought you had.

Does Your Dollar Have The Same Value Today As Yesterday?

Dollar hits record low against euro

Many investors are factoring a rate cut from the Federal Reserve, driving the dollar even lower. Record oil prices also pressure the dollar.

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -- The U.S. dollar dipped to another record against the euro on Monday, trading below $1.44 for the first time as markets anticipated a likely interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve later this week.

The 13-nation euro rose above its previous record of $1.4393, set Friday, and climbed as far as $1.4438 before settling back to $1.4404. That was still above the $1.4385 it reached late Friday.

The euro has been climbing steadily against the dollar, soaring to new highs almost weekly since August amid fears over the U.S. economy's health -- stoked by the subprime credit crisis and increasingly disappointing economic reports. more
